Black Rock playa dust is alkaline and abrasively fine — closer to a powder than road dirt — and it gets into everything: down into carpet backing, inside the vents, under seat tracks, into the headliner, and into every seam of the trunk. A regular car wash moves the dust you can see and leaves the rest to drift back out over the next month of driving.

Getting it out for real takes a different process. We use compressed air to blow dust up out of crevices and vents before we vacuum, steam-clean the seams and hard-to-reach zones, shampoo-extract the mats and carpets where the dust has settled deepest, and rinse the exterior and underbody where it's caked on. An optional odor treatment handles the campfire-and-gear smell that comes home with the dust.
