Most of what people call a "scratch" actually lives in the clear coat — the transparent top layer over your paint. Swirls, scuffs, and the gray or colored streaks left when another car or a shopping cart brushes yours (paint transfer) usually sit in that clear layer. Machine polishing levels the clear coat down to remove them and restores the gloss, no repainting involved.

The honest test is your fingernail: if it catches in the scratch, it has gone through the clear coat into the paint or primer, and correction can improve how it looks but not make it vanish — that's body-shop territory. We'd rather tell you that up front than take your money and disappoint you, so we're straight about which category your mark falls into.
